AUTUMN NEWSLETTER

Hello Friends. In this issue, we share highlights from our volunteer planting day and 2024 AGM, the latest on our campaign against large-scale commercial events, a round up of park news, including Lambeth's plans to pilot leaving the park unlocked at night, and the latest delights in the walled garden.

THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEER PLANTERS!

We had a fantastic planting day with over 1,300 new plants going in to the biodiversity area; a multitude of different species, chosen for both the drier and wetter soils across the mounds. Many thanks to our 26 volunteers of all ages, and Lambeth for co-organising. The next planting day is confirmed for Saturday 7 December, see end of the newsletter for full details.

Our 2024 AGM

Thank you to everyone who joined us at this year's AGM and shared thoughts, concerns and ideas for the future of the park. The Chair's report can be found here and full minutes to follow on the website blog soon. Many thanks also to our guest speaker Ann Aitken-Davies from the Swan Sanctuary, who shared the fascinating story of the re-homing of the cygnets.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: EVENTS IN THE PARK

As many of you know, the Friends have long been opposed to large commercial events in Brockwell Park.

We will be collaborating with other local groups to insist that decisions about future commercial events are made with full transparency and meaningful local representation. We will campaign for the publishing of an authoritative financial appraisal showing both income and cost, and for proper professional assessments of all the impacts on users of the park, on the landscape and ecology, and on local residents.

Please get in touch on info@brockwellpark.co.uk, if you have an expertise which might help our campaign.

NEWSBITES

Gold again! For the walled garden
We were awarded Gold again this year in the London in Bloom annual assessment and are very pleased! Recently our brilliant group of volunteers has been busy tackling the weeding and clearing invasive plants to make spaces for new plants - eg Kalimeris mongolica 'Antonia'.
Refurbishment of the 4th pond underway
You may have already seen that Lambeth are in the process of dredging, clearing and reinstating the 4th pond. A welcome re-addition to the park, see some work-in-progress in the photo below.
Un-locking of the park at night
Lambeth Council have confirmed that they will be ceasing to lock
Brockwell Park overnight as part of a cost-cutting exercise. The pilot is due to start in November 2024 for 9 months. The plans have been met with concern from residents surrounding the park due to fears around safety and anti-social behaviour, and lack of information available. FoBP will be asking for further information around the monitoring of the pilot and asking how residents can best flag issues.
